It’s New School Year Time!

Time for an AC Refresher Course

It’s that time again. The summer has slowly slipped away. Kids all over the country are either already knee-deep in their new studies or in full preparation mode for the upcoming year. Today’s kids know the importance of planning—stocking up on school supplies, brushing up on the periodic table, reviewing math equations, completing summer reading, etc. These basic refreshers are excellent ways to get ready for additional learning. After all, the more you prepare, the fewer opportunities there are for surprises. It’s a good practice to follow—even for adults. Right?

Take your air conditioner, for instance. Do you know how it works? Are you familiar with the basic components that make up the system? If you answered no, you can’t possibly scold your kids for not being prepared when you don’t follow your own advice!

Air Conditioning 101

Fortunately your friends at Cool Techs know all about the inner workings of air conditioning systems. Here are some basic terms to help you understand your cooling system much better and talk about it more knowledgeably.

Condenser: The condenser unit is part of the central air conditioning system. It typically has a heat exchanger that is responsible for cooling vapors and condensing them into liquid.

Compressor: For most typical central air conditioning systems, the compressor is located in the outdoor unit. Basically, it is a pump that pressurizes the refrigerant—moving it between the evaporator and condenser coils.

Evaporator: This part receives the liquid refrigerant. It allows compressed cooling chemicals—like Freon—to transform from liquid into gas while absorbing heat.

Expansion valve: The expansion valve removes pressure from the liquid refrigerant. It helps change the state from a liquid to a vapor and regulates the refrigerant flow into the evaporator.
